Wisdom Montfort International School

A Study guide for students of WMIS

STEP 1

HAVE A REASON TO STUDY

(Be self motivated and self driven to study).

THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP. Choose your career early in life. The earlier you choose your career the greater your chance of achieving it. The desire and the determination to become someone important in the society (doctor, engineer, scientist, pilot, teacher, Brother, Priest, politician, etc) will drive you to learn better.

STEP 2

SET YOUR 3 GOALS

Goal 1:Long Term Goal. What do you want to be in future? Choose NOW. It is your long term goal.
Goal 2: Short Term Goal. To achieve your goal 1 you have to pass your examinations/assessments w i t h h i g h m a r k s / g r a d e s . N o w , p a s s i n g a l l y o u r examinations/assessments with high marks/grades is your short term goal.
Goal 3: Immediate Goal. To achieve goal 2, you have to learn your maximum TODAY. This is your immediate goal.

STEP 3

ORGANISE YOUR TIME.

To achieve your immediate goal, it is very important to use the 24 hours of the day TODAY. Hence prepare a daily time-table which you will strictly follow. Keep this time-table right in front of your study place at home. (Refer to the sample time table given). Some are early birds, doing their best learning early in the morning and some are late birds doing their best learning late at night. Know your type. Your time-table should suit your type.

STEP 4

CREATE CONDUCTIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR STUDY.

If possible have your own room to study. It should have as much natural light as possible. The room should be sufficiently ventilated and noise free. Keep all your study materials such as books, pen etc close at hand. Keep very young children away from your study room.

STEP 5

PROPER POSTURE.

While at study, sit erect, with back bone straight, to allow free flow of blood to your brain. Posture should be conducive for intellectual work.

STEP 6

REWARD/PUNISH YOURSELF.

Before you begin each study session, set your goal for that study. One study session should not be more than 45 minutes. Check whether you reached your goal or not at the end of each study session. If yes, reward yourself by doing something that you like (eg : eating a chocolate, listening to music etc). If no, punish yourself by giving up something that you like (eg. Not taking coffee/ tea in the morning, not going out with friends etc.)

STEP 7

HAVE A PEACE OF MIND.

Be at peace with yourself, your parents, siblings, relatives, neighbours, classmates, friends, teachers etc. When you are emotionally disturbed, you can’t learn. Hence if needed, get guidance and counselling from an adult whom you can trust, to be at peace with yourself and with everyone else. It is always good to have a trustworthy adult to whom you share your problems and seek help whenever you are in trouble. School counsellor will be the right person you could consult whenever your peace of mind is affected.

STEP 8

PHYSICAL EXERCISE.

It is proved that with 20 minutes of skipping you can improve your learning efficiency by 25%. Hence take regular physical exercise. (eg: play table tennis, tennis, football, basketball, badminton, jog, skip, dance, work in the garden etc)

STEP 9

REGULAR REVISION.

The more often you revise, the greater your retention will be. Every night just before you go to sleep, quickly go over all the lessons covered that day in the class. Revise the same thing, the next morning.

STEP 10

RIGHT FOOD HABITS.

Never eat stomach full before study. Let your stomach be half full after your meal, when you want to do serious study. Too much intake of starchy food (eg: rice) will make you feel drowsy and sleepy while at study. Choose more of wheat products, vegetables, fruits etc.

STEP 11

SUFFICIENT REST.

Six to six and a half hours of sleep per day is necessary and sufficient for efficient learning.

STEP 12

HAVE SELF CONFIDENCE.

Believe that you can achieve your goals. Visualize yourself achieving your goal. At several times of the day, tell yourself “I can become a (your goal) and will become a (your goal)”. And, you will be what you want to be!
